An organizational chart also called an org chart or organization chart, is a visual tool that shows the reporting relationships in an organization. This char is valuable in that it enables one to visualize a complete organization, by means of the picture it presents.

A company’s organizational chart is typically illustrating the relation between people within the organization. Such relations might include chief executive officer to the various department, managing director to director, and managers to sub-workers. When the organization chart grows too large it can be split into smaller charts for separate departments within the organization.

Usually, there are 3 types of organizational charts:

  • Hierarchical structure: In this structure employees are grouped with every employee having one clear supervisor. The grouping is done based on a few factors like function, geography, or product.
  • Matrix Structure: In this structure, the reporting relationships are set up as a grid, or matrix, rather than in the traditional hierarchy.
  • Horizontal/Flat Structure: In this structure, many levels of middle management are eliminated. This enables employees to make decisions quickly and independently.
